The Bechdel Test

The Bechdel Test – accidentally created by Alison Bechdel – is a simple test applied to movies to assess whether or not it is possibly sexist. It has three simple rules.

  1. Does it have more than one woman in the film?
  2. Do they talk to each other?
  3. Do they talk about things other than men.

Most of us could look at our dvd collections and realise most of our favourite films fail dismally – Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Sherlock Holmes, Inception. Thankfully, a few of my favourite films pass with flying colours. It is a relatively simple test which is good to apply to see how hollywood is going with the writing of women. With few women writers, and even fewer women directors, men claim that their massive problem is they dont know how to write women.  Anita Sarkeesian points out that this is more likely to be laziness.

Listen here – to this interview with Anita Sarkeesian of FeministFrequency – you will need to go in about 15-20 mins.
